Guitarists of the Rio de la Plata 3 CDs and 1 DVD

There is a complete list of all titles on the 3 CDs and 1 DVD on the link.

Ricardo Munoz's dedication to his exhaustive Historia de la Guitarra (Buenos Aires, 1930) claimed, with no exaggeration that Argentina (and the Rio de la Plata region) was the "premier bastion" of the guitar in the first decades of the twentieth century. Below is a brief sketch of its evolution into the centre of classical guitar activity.

The six string single strung classical guitar came to Argentina early in the nineteenth century. The Italian guitarist Esteban Massini (1778-1838), arrived to Argentina in 1822. Eight years later the poet Esteban Echeverria returned from his European studies, bringing with him the teachings of Sor and Aguado. Many others followed, including such pivotal figures as Gaspar Sagreras (1838-1901) in 1860, Carlos Garcia Tolsa (1858-1905) in 1885, and Antonio Jimenez Manjon (1866-1919) in 1893. Consequently, native guitarists also began to flourish, prominently among them, Juan Alais (1844-1914). Finally, of the disciples of Francisco Tarrega, the father of the modern classical guitar, arrived. Miguel Llobet (in 1910), Emilio Pujol, and Josefina Robledo came for extended periods to perform and teach. Others settled permanently in Buenos Aires, including Domingo Prat (first visit in 1908), and Hilarion Leloup (1876-1939) in 1912, establishing schools and academies that at their height provided instruction to over five thousand students, laying the foundation for an immense flowering of young virtuosi.

Instructional/Guitar/DVD
Format: DVD
Author: Ervin Somogyi

$49.95

If you are a friend of the guitar to the point of having become interested in guitar construction, than you will have been bitten by the bug of trying to figure out how to make a guitar with a really good voice. If you are a player, you might have wondered why different guitars sound so different. There are dozens of books out now about how to build a guitar, but rather little information available about the finer points of working with its sound.

Ervin Somogyi's guitars are known for having extraordinarily satisfying voices; they have been described as lustrous, deep, and astonishing. Having reached the age where he is ready to share his knowledge, he has also become the premier teacher of that final level of lutherie work: Tone.

This DVD is the companion to Ervin's recently published two volume book about the guitar and its sound. This material pertains equally to the classic guitar and to the steel string guitar; it will be of interest to musicians, acousticians, and aficionados.

David Leisner: Classics & Discoveries DVD 92 minutes $24.95

Internationally renowned classical guitarist David Leisner plays a live concert program with some pieces that are well-known and others that may be new to guitarists. One of the discoveries is the Sonata in b minor by Wenzeslaus Matiegka (1773-1830), an unduly neglected composer that Leisner calls the Beethoven of the guitar. It’s a great addition to the guitar repertoire.

Another discovery is Leisner’s own Nel Mezzo: Sonata, which Soundboard magazine called an original and profoundly personal work...powerful, angry and moving music. Now played quite a bit, the music of Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) was virtually unknown when Leisner recorded and published some of his music almost 30 years ago. Here, two of Mertz’s pieces display the passionate Romanticism of this music. The classics include the sublime Prelude, Fugue and Allegro by J. S. Bach, two delightful Rags by Scott Joplin in Leisner’s arrangements, and a dazzling encore of Etude No. 12 by Villa-Lobos.

Leisner introduces each piece informally and is interviewed during intermission by Andrew Dickenson. The interview covers a number of topics in depth, including some of Leisner’s secrets about easing physical tensions while playing the guitar, and his thoughts about the music he’s playing and about composition.

On this, the solo performance recording, Mr. Zanon plays guitar compositions spanning three centuries. An incredibly colorful and virtuistic display of guitar techniques, moods, and temperaments is captured on this film. Compositions performed include: Sonata in A Minor by J.S. Bach (Grave, Fugue, Andante, Allegro); Johann Kaspar Mertz opern - Revue Op. 8, No. 3 Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti; Old Song by Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez; Appassionata by Ronaldo Miranda; Sonata 11, 144, and 391 by Dominico Scarlatti; and the extremely difficult yet striking 20th Century musical essay on death by Alexandre de Faria entitled Prelude for Guitar (Eyes of a Recollection).

An outstanding video series by someone who studied in Spain with:

 Juan Maya "Marote" (1972-1974),

Sabicas (1975-1978)

& Pepe Habichuela (1979-1984).

Guillermo Rios has since then performed with Jose Greco, Maria Benitez, Jose Molina, Maria Alba & Rosa Montoya. He also has performed in solo concerts at Carnegie Hall 3 times.

Guillermo Rios is one of the few world class Flamenco Guitarists who has studied with the Spanish masters in the Golden Era of the 1970's. He is also probably the only guitarist to play a Solea in other keys than E and A (Solea por Buleria). This invaluable attribute is to be found on Volume II. You truly can learn everything from him. There is such a proliferation of Flamenco guitar instructional material available today, that distributors, in many cases, are offering new arrivals that are quoting American and Brazilian guitarists as their maestros (ex. Aaron Gilmartin). "No hay nada que ver con la musica Flamenca" - that's Spanish for "That has nothing to do with Flamenco music".

What have wise customers been saying about Guillermo's videos for years? (These initally appeared for sale in 1992-1996.) The most frequent comment is invariably: "These lessons are taught at a slow enough speed that I can learn from them better than others that are closer to concert performance speed". (ex. Juan Serrano, etc. instructional videos-these may be more suited for intermediate to professional players due to their speed.)

For 2 years now Randy Osborne, the owner of Fine Fretted String Instruments, has been the International distributor of Guillermo Rios' Flamenco Guitar instructional videos. Guillermo purchased his 1965 Miguel Rodriguez and his 1967 Manuel de la Chica Flamenco guitars at FFSI.

   Volumes I - III are available in DVD format. (5 / 18 / 05).
